How To Maintain Your Braces During Illness

Whether you’re a student, parent, or professional, getting sick is one of the worst feelings. You miss out on work, school, and your usual routine, all while being stuck in bed, waiting to feel better. But even when you’re sick, it’s important to maintain your braces care. Taking care of your oral hygiene is crucial to keep your orthodontic treatment on track, even when you feel unwell.

At Moon Orthodontics, we understand how challenging it can be to stick to your routine when you’re sick. Dr. Moon, our expert orthodontist, shares five essential tips for caring for your braces while you’re under the weather.

Don’t Forget About Your Braces Care and Oral Hygiene

When you’re sick, staying in bed and letting your routine slide is tempting. However, neglecting your oral hygiene can allow bacteria to build up, which can reduce your orthodontic treatment.

Here’s a quick guide to keeping your braces clean:

  • Brush above and below your brackets in a circular motion.
  • Clean the inner surfaces of your teeth using a back-and-forth motion.
  • Brush the chewing surfaces of your teeth thoroughly.

In just 3 to 5 minutes, you can make sure your braces stay clean. Using an interdental brush helps remove food and plaque between your teeth and braces. Even if you’re tired, it’s important to brush and floss at least twice a day. Setting an alarm or a reminder can help you stay on top of your hygiene, even when you’re not feeling your best.

Once you recover, be sure to replace your toothbrush to prevent reinfection and to keep your mouth healthy.

Rinse Your Mouth After Feeling Nauseous

If you’ve been vomiting, stomach acid can damage your teeth and cause bad breath. Dr. Moon suggests rinsing your mouth with water or antiseptic mouthwash to remove the acid and freshen your breath.

Although you may want to brush right away, it’s best to wait at least 30 minutes after vomiting to avoid damaging your enamel. In the meantime, rinsing your mouth will help clean and protect your teeth.

Dealing with Discomfort

Braces apply gentle pressure to your teeth, which can sometimes be uncomfortable, especially when sick. To relieve discomfort, Dr. Moon recommends taking over-the-counter medications as directed.

If your braces’ components irritate your mouth, orthodontic wax can provide relief. This natural wax creates a protective barrier between your braces and the sensitive areas of your mouth, reducing friction and irritation.

Eat Healthy, Braces-Friendly Foods

Skipping meals is never a good idea, especially when you’re sick and need nutrients to recover. Stick to soft, braces-friendly foods that are easy to eat and packed with nutrients, like:

  • Vegetable or chicken soup
  • Mashed potatoes or oatmeal
  • Smoothies with fresh fruits and vegetables

Avoid sugary or sticky foods, which can damage your braces or get stuck between your teeth.
